No lie, I've been binge watching the episodes slowly over the past few days, and I am loving the show more and more with each episode. I've been looking for other cartoons similar to it, but Dan vs really is wholly unique amongst all other cartoons. The only thing I've been able to find that's even remotely similar is Invader Zim.
It shouldn't be this hard to find shows that throw out the old and boring tropes of 'love' and 'forgiveness' and replaces them with 'hate' and 'vengeance.' That's arguably the thing I love most about Dan vs; it doesn't try and contain itself to old and boring plot devices: instead, it blazes new trails by having a character who is arguably the villain nine times out of ten fight greater villains before ultimately triumphing. Even better, no matter who Dan hurts or how much damage he causes, it's rare he ever get's a taste of karma with a few notable exceptions. In fact, in nearly every episode, he comes out ahead in the end.
Taking a sec to ignore the show as a whole and focus on specifics, Dan himself is an expertly made character. He's the complete inversion of the most important traits of nearly all other protagonists. For instance, when faced with the choice forgive or take revenge, where every other character always chooses to forgive, Dan always takes revenge, even if his revenge is ultimately pointless. Likewise, when given the choice to go left or right, he will always go down and under, making new solutions to impossible problems. Dan is all about taking the road less traveled, even when he reason that road is less traveled is because it's covered in bramble. Honestly, Dan is a character that recognizes and acknowledges all the chaos and insanity in the world, but is not exempt from it. He is the kind of character who'd cut off is nose to spite his face based on principal alone. Ultimately, Dan is a character willing to go to any lengths to achieve his ends, and I love how Dan always seems to win in the end, regardless of the odds stacked against him.
