I'm gonna ask a few specific questions to keep it on TOPIC.
I have a GENERAL idea of what you guys want from past conversations?
IN THE 'HYPOTHETICAL' EVENT THE SHOW IS REVIVED, WHAT DIRECTION WOULD YOU WANT IT TO TAKE ON THE BELOW ISSUES?
7. How supernatural or fantastical should the show go?
Dan Vs has a wide range of tones, from surprisingly down to earth(The Neighbors, The Bank), to exaggerated reality (Summer Camp, Lemonade Shane Gang) to semi-supernatural mixed(The Boss; New Mexico) to full supernatural and fantastical(Superhero, Wolfman)
Where should the show aim for?
I have a GENERAL idea of what you guys want from past conversations?
IN THE 'HYPOTHETICAL' EVENT THE SHOW IS REVIVED, WHAT DIRECTION WOULD YOU WANT IT TO TAKE ON THE BELOW ISSUES?
1. Do you think Dan Vs should have some degree of continuity and character arcs?
Not just a fully serialized option either. Think of it more as a spectrum. The original series was already slightly more then pure episodic, with a decent degree of callbacks to past episodes and the occasional sequel episode. About as much as modern Spongebob(Lot's of callback references and the occasional dedicated sequel episode, but no major character or story arcs). The next degree up after that would be something like Season 6 of South Park or the first 2/3's of Solar Opposites so far, a few arcs that pop in and influence things every other episode or so, some running gags, minor character progression, but no major arcs. The step up after that is something like Southpark Season 18 and 23, or my cancelled Dan Vs Everything fic. After that is full serialization. WHERE DO YOU THINK DAN VS SHOULD FALL IF IT WAS REVIVED?
2. Caring, Empathetic, Unconfortable with her work Season 3 style Elise, or cold murderous communist killing New Mexico slaughtering Season 1 Elise?
Season 1 Elise was a cold calculated killer, who was arguably the biggest villain in the series, a total sociopath who only had compassion for one man(and even then she'd probably kill him if she had to), while Season 3 is a mostly pretty chill spy gal who only goes after super villains and doesn't even like her work or lying to her husband. Season 3 Elise arguably had more depth and heart, but was also a major Deus Ex Machina and Mary Sue. Season 1 Elise was a bit more flat, but that could be fixed if the show took a Spec Ops: The Line approach and actually showed us the fallout of her actions. I get the feeling this might depend on what you picked above, and what you personally like.
3. Repeat the Original's style, or try to achieve Mandel's Original Vision?
Do you want the show to try to stick to what made the original, avoid adult subjects, stay kid friendly-ish? Or would you rather the show follow the original idea Mandel had in the 2008 Adult Swim pitch, with such things as onscreen murder, Hortence's dark backstory, and Dan keeping a collection of drivers licenses he stole from every hooker he's ever been with because that was a thing? Maybe something in between, where the show stays reserved alot of the time, but occasionally pulls out the gore and sex cards at just the right moment for the punch....or when it's funny?
4. How dark?
Dan Vs is already in many ways a black saterical comedy, but the question is, should it go darker? Staying with the original shows nice midrange tone allows you to cover pretty much everything, though things broading on either end of the extreme feel weird (The Brocoli monster was too silly for the shows darker tone, while things like the Vegan discussion and Elise's murder felt a bit too real for the tone)
You could stay in the nice midzone, or you could push the tone a smidge darker to provide a massive boost to opportunitys for character growth(BOTH Elise's would benefits from this, whether it be her trying to better herself and escape the black ops life, or her facing the consequences of her violent sociopathy and seeing what she's done. Either way, darker tone means more character development room at the cost of some wacky comedy)
5. Extend the cast with more recurring characters?
The original show had little in the way of mainstay recurring characters(Elise's family would be moreso minor characters who only appear in specific roles) Wally and Crunchy be the closest true examples. If we could have an extended recurring cast, say, perhaps, another friend for Dan to bump off of(Ted perhaps?), maybe one of his hookers? A colleague of Elise's to flesh out her stuff? Some sort of recurring straightman? Would you appreciate an enlarged recurring cast?
6. Design.
Do you prefer the current character designs, or perhaps something closer to the (real, not the fake exec ones) beta designs seen here?
This question also applies to the shows logo as seen above.
