EDIT: After a bit of thinking, I decided to change the game I'll be playing for this nuzlocke. As such, I'll be editing the rules a bit as well, as Pokemon Reborn is a much, much harder game. It's also a lot darker, so be warned.
Dan Vs. Nuzlocke Rules:
*Catch the first thing you see in a route
*Everything must be nicknamed
*If something faints, instead of auto dying, I must roll death saves, sort of like D&D. Basically, I roll a d20 a couple of times until I either have three successes or three losses. 10 or above is a success, below is a fail. A nat 20 equals 3 successes, and a nat 1 is two fails. This is necessary, trust me, Reborn is a literal meat grinder
*Areas are a bit different in Pokemon Reborn, so the different areas counting as different encounters still apply, such as alleys, rooftops, ect.
*Static encounters are freebies
*Dupes/species Clause is on. I don't want a team full of Pidgies, thank you
*Shiny clause is also on. Just because it's a fan game, doesn't mean that missing out on a shiny would be less painful. I tend to still use shinies if I catch one, but that just means they can die like any other Pokemon. Shinies are more common in Reborn and therefore I'm limited to 1 per area.
*Story must go on. I'll be writing as I play, so if I get a TPK, I'll just have to load up the last save and go again.
Note: Updates may be a bit slow, as I'm going to be playing three different nuzlockes, which will be... hard. But, fun.
Prologue:
“Stupid brats,” Dan groused, fists balled as he stomped his way to his destination. “I’ll show ‘em.”
It had been a nice Summer day in Casa Paradiso (Lies!). The sun was shining (too bright, it shined directly into my eyes when I woke up and blinded me!). The birds are singing (they’re loud and off key!). And the kids- are being obnoxious pieces of shits who think they’re better than me because of a stupid video game! ...And so, that brings us to the short, dark haired, man named Dan, on his way to his friend’s house.
“Chris? Chris!” Dan shouted, pounding on the door. He turned the door knob, cursing when he found it locked. “Why is this locked? Chris!”
“Jeez, hold on,” the sound of Chris’s voice was muffled behind the door. There was a click, and it began to open. “What is- Ow!” Dan shoved his way in, slamming the door into Chris and knocking his tall friend on his ass. “That hurt!”
“Chris, do you still have that old Pokemon Blue game from when we were teenagers?” Dan asked, not acknowledging his friend’s pain.
“Y-yeah, why?” Chris asked warily, rubbing at his face.
“Where is it, I need it,” he said, looking around.
“Again, why?” Chris continued to press, pushing himself off the ground. “What are you planning to do with it?”
“I need to restart it and show those miscreant children that I’m better than them at their own game!” he declared, finding what he was looking for. Chris' eyes widened with panic, and he quickly snatched the cartridge out of his hands. “Hey!”
“You can’t erase my save file!” Chris cried, holding the game close to his chest and backing away. “I worked hard to beat that game back then, you can’t just delete my memories!”
“But you don’t even play it anymore!” Dan reached for it, and Chris held it up high over his head. “Give it!”
“No!” Chris yelled, a stern, finality to his tone that he rarely uses on Dan. “I might fold easily to a lot of your schemes and demands, but I will not let you reset my game.” Dan’s face began to turn red, and a hint of fear flashed in Chris’s eyes. “Uh… b-besides, it’s old and outdated, Pokemon has changed a lot over the years. It wouldn’t be useful to you.”
“...Fine,” Dan growled, simmering down. Chris sighed in relief. “Do you have any other games here?”
“Ehhh…” Chris’s eyes shifted. “N-no, not really. It is a kid’s game after all.”
“Hmph, fine. Then you can take me to the store and buy me one of those new games.”
“Can’t, Elise confiscated my credit card after an… incident,” he finished after a moment of hesitation. -Free cake for life? And all I have to do is enter my credit card number and download this file? Hell yes!- “And they’re pretty expensive, Pokemon’s still a popular franchise. And don’t get me started on the consoles.”
“Ugh, fine!” Dan stomped over to the office, Chris cautiously following behind him. Dan sat in the desk chair and began to boot up the computer. “Then I’ll just pirate it and- what the?!” As soon as the computer turned on, the screen started flashing and glitching. A loud voice boomed from the speaker “Low low prices on hemorrhoid cream!” as thousands of ads popped up. Dan panicked as he frantically tried x-ing them out, but more kept appearing, until the screen went black, and the voice was cut off mid word. Dan stared at the screen for a good minute, waiting for his heartbeat to slow down from what was more or less a jump scare, before turning to Chris. His tall friend looked a bit embarrassed, holding the plug of the computer in his hand.
“That uh… is also related to the incident,” he explained sheepishly.
“What did you do, download every computer virus on the planet?” Dan exclaimed.
“I don’t wanna talk about,” Chris said, setting the cord down. “It was… really stupid, in hindsight.”
“I believe that,” Dan stood back up, a scowl on his face. “Do you have any other computer in this house?”
“Well…” Chris drawled, placing a finger on his chin in thought and pausing. Dan waited for about 1 and a half seconds before punching him in the arm. “Ow!”
“You were taking too long. Do you have another computer or not?” he demanded.
“I think, maybe?” Chris rubbed his arm. “I think I saw Elise working on something in the basement, it looked like a computer. But-” Dan shoved past him and ran for the basement. “But she said not to touch it! It’s something she’s working on for her job!”
Dan ignored him, and as Chris hurried after him, he could hear his short friend give a scream of frustration, followed by a lot of banging. Chris peeked down the stairwell that led to the basement, and saw Dan aggressively trying to force the door open.
“We’re really not allowed to use that computer,” Chris repeated. Dan ceased his efforts for a moment before giving the door a good kick, making a foot shaped hole in the door. “Dan!”
“Heheh…” Dan chortled, reaching inside the hole and unlocking the door from the other side. “We’re in.” He pushed the door open and stepped inside, followed by Chris, a defeated look on the brunette’s face.
Many of the old, household items Chris and Elise had stored down here were pushed to one end of the basement, making room for the… thing, on the other end. It was big, bulky, with wires everywhere and emitting a strange, green glow. It appeared to have a monitor, a keyboard and mouse. And was all attached to what looked like a big laser thing.
“It… kinda looks like a computer?” Chris said as Dan hurried over to the alien like technology. “How do we even turn it on?”
“Simple,” Dan said, smiling now. “We push buttons until it comes on.” He started with the several buttons on the monitor, managing to turn the screen on, then started pressing several buttons on the bulky, box-like parts which could be anything from the computer or a bomb.
“Dan, stop, we don’t know what this thing actually is, we can just wait for Elise to buy a-” There was a soft whirring sound, followed by flashing lights. Dan rubbed his hands eagerly as Chris took a cautious step back, and… a home screen came on. “...huh.”
“Success!” Dan declared, clicking open an internet browser. “And it’s connected to the internet, perfect.” He typed into the search bar ‘free pokemon games’ and hit enter.
“Careful,” Chris cautioned as Dan began scrolling through the results. “That’s an easy way to get a virus-.”
“You would know,” Dan retorted.
“Plus,” Chris continued. “It’s probably a government computer or something, so if you pirate anything you could get us all in trouble.”
“Ugh! Stupid Government,” he threw his hands in exasperation. “So what do you suggest?”
“Well,” Chris scratched his head. “I think I remember hearing that there’s some fan games that are actually pretty well done. They’re free, and it’s more legal than pirating.”
“How is that more legal than pirating?” Dan questioned skeptically.
“Well, when you pirate an official game, you’re stealing from the company’s hard work. But fan games are legal as long as they're free. It’s when/if they start making money off of it that it becomes illegal… or until Nintendo throws a hissy fit and sends a DMCA.” Chris answered. Dan squinted at him for a second, before shrugging.
“Works for me,” he said, turning back to the screen and inputting ‘Pokemon fan games’ into the search bar. “Now, let’s see here… Ooh, 'Pokemon Reborn', that sounds interesting.” He clicked on it and began reading through the description. Chris leaned over his shoulder to look, then made a light hissing sound.
“That’s a really hard fangame, Dan,” Chris warned. "Like, really hard?"
“It's a kids game, how bad could it be?” Dan scoffed. “Even if it's hard, just means I can really show those brats up. Besides, how do you even know it's hard? I thought you didn't play anymore.”
“Um,” Chris straightened up and fiddled with his thumbs. “You know, I still read about it sometimes. For nostalgia.”
“Whatever,” Dan scrolled down. “Ohh, it has a darker storyline, it’s perfect!” He clicked on the download link. Download time, 5 minutes. “Wow, this is quick… looks like technology is redeeming itself a little.”
“Still gonna take a few minutes,” Chris said nervously, glancing back towards the door.
“Eh, what could happen in a few minutes?”
“...Dan’s here, isn’t he?” Elise said to herself as she walked into her house. There was a dent on the inside of the door, her office door was open, and the computer that Chris infected with a virus last week was unplugged. Now, all of these things aren’t enough evidence that Dan was here, and yet… she just had a feeling.
Where could they be? She thought, looking around her house. Her stomach turned cold as a thought came to her mind. “Oh no.” She ran for the basement. If he messes with that infinity universe transporter... “Dan!”
“Oh, hey Elise,” Dan said, not turning from the computer. “You’re just in time to watch me play Pokemon!” he clicked a few times, and while Elise couldn’t on what from here, she could see the transporter turn on and begin to charge. Shit!
“Elise, I can explain-” Chris began.
“Dan stop, don’t!” Elise yelled, running with her hand outstretched. There was a bright light as the laser transporter fired. The three of them froze in place, then began to dissolve into pixels, all flying into the transporter. And just like that, they were gone.
A short prologue, but I wanted to get it out there before I begin playing, because I wanted you guys to vote for what starters they pick! There's choices from gen 1-7, and I'm not sure which ones would be good. Dan would likely pick a fire type, and I was gonna have Elise pick water (to counter Dan) and Chris pick grass, but I wasn't sure on much besides that. I'd make a poll here, but I can only make one and Straw Poll won't let me make more than three options, so please leave a comment to vote! Thank you, and I hope you enjoyed
