First of all, what I'll say is something more akin to a personal view of the situation. While I may criticize the show, I only mean to engage in debate and ask (and try to give an answer to) the questions that were not asked (as far as I know).
What would make a sequel work ? (IMO)
Let's look at the original show's qualities :
-The 2000' vibes
-The satirical humor
-Dan's essence (what defines "Dan" as a meta narrative tool) as "the incarnation of uncontrolled rage"
-The catharsis some episodes can bring
-The more "typical kid show but adult" humor, no swear, no sex, no never ending dread caused by the redundancy of life.
Honestly this is what are some of the show's best traits in my opinion.
And if the sequels lack those traits, I think it'll fail.
Should the show be "modernized" ? (add representation, more up-to-time humor, etc)
Short answer : It should be done but be limited to the satire part.
Long answer : I think modernizing the show too much would absolutely kill the "2000' era vibes" that were one of the show's strengths, however talking about more modern subjects seems obvious, else it'll get boring.
However representation is a no-no, at least for the main cast, adding a character (which would be a token character anyway) is not the best of ideas when the dynamic was solely based on a trio before.
And I think Dan's sexuality shouldn't be explored (except perhaps to make him ace) as his essence is literally opposed to romance.
Will the sequel even be good ?
This is where the controversial part starts.
I genuinely think it could not work.
It's been ten years, it will be a different studio and we live in different times, how could we know the show will succeed to stay true to the original ?
However I know it can be argued that 10 years left the idea to mature and become better.
Will there even be a sequel ?
It's been radio silence for quite some time now, and with each day passing by, it's more and more sure that the project will fail.
Believing can do miracles, but faith isn't the only thing to take into account here, and honestly I'm not even sure the show has its place in the modern industry.
"Villainous" has replaced "DanVS" in some sense, and it has a broader audience.
And this community is drawing its last breath, let's be honest this place will return to the grave it has risen from if nothing happens after a whole year.
