= It's been one year since Dennis was adopted, and he's hated it for the entire time. The Good-whatevers were losers who baby Dennis and act like he can't handle himself. He can't stop thinking of him . Dan, the man who fought his "dad" for him. He was his idol, his shining beacon of light. He sees him in the news sometimes. He misses him.
Dennis has a seemingly good life. His "parents" coddle him with toys and coddle him in general. And he absolutely despises it. They treat him like a baby, Dan would never. Dan. Dennis hasn't seen Dan in a year, yet he remembers the time he spent with him vividly.
"Promise me you'll steal from them every chance you get." Those were the last words he ever said to him. These words were seared into his brain. He did steal from his "parents" a lot.
Dennis looks at his brother, Kale. He was the best part of this terrible family. He'll miss Kale the most.
Dennis finishes packing his stuff. He's running away to the place he belongs. He doesn't know how he'll get there, but as Dan would say, "life finds a way to suck, it's your job to make it not suck."
Dennis hastily writes a note. He leaves five words for his parents, technically six but that one's a no-no word. For Kale, he gave some more sincere words. He articulates it as best he can for a six-year old.
The small boy grabs his 157th Lego shiv and grips it for the road. He leaves the house and stands on the sidewalk. Dennis looks back to his house and turns around. It's not his house, it was never his house. His house was Dan's, it always was.
He wanders to a park and lies down on the grass. Letting the grass blades scratch his body as he shifts to a more comfortable position, Dennis slowly succumbs to slumber. He needs as much energy as possible to find Dan.
Dennis wakes up to an empty park, good. People might wonder why a child is sleeping in a park. He stretches and gets ready for his day. He takes some food out and eats it.
Dennis has no idea where he is. He's in a shady part of town and he wants to leave fast. With a white knuckle grip on his makeshift shiv, he slowly speeds up through the alley. Dennis wonders if it's worth it. Does Dan even remember him? He pushes those thoughts away.
Dennis stops by a mall to get more things. People walk by ignoring the child wandering around alone. Some people give a look and quickly walk away to avoid responsibility. Dennis gets to the food court and steals some food from tables. Until he hears something.
An angry voice ranting about a random inconvenience?
Dennis dashes towards the voice as fast as his stubby little legs can take him. The voice stops talking and appears again but quieter. He loses the voice in the sea of other voices.
Dennis climbs up a table to look at where the voice came from. Then it hits Dennis. If Dan is here, then his car is here! Dennis dashes out the mall and into the parking lot. He sees Dan's car as it drives away.
"All I'm saying is if baby powder is made from babies." Dan rambles on.
"It's not" Chris interrupts.
"Ugh, IF it is, then what's goat powder made of?"
"Goat powder?"
"STOP THE CAR!"
"Whoa, what's wrong Dan?" Chris looks over.
"I- sorry I just… remembered someone." Dan looked down at his hands that are currently coated in baby powder.
Chris looked over. "Who?"
"An old pal." Dan wishes he hadn't missed Dennis as much as he did. Dan remembers playing with Dennis. He was livid when he found out he couldn't have him. Dennis was perfect for Dan, an angry child that knew respect and how to get back at someone. Dan wondered if he could ever get to see him again.
The car tracks had been a useful tool for Dennis. Chris was never a good driver, he got the job done. And Chris's job for Dennis was to lead him to Dan's house. Turns out that following car tracks was difficult. Dennis has been getting tired but he can't let this car out of his sight.
If Dennis let this car get away, he would never get to see his true dad again, and he can't stand that thought. What if the car marks wash away? No, he just has to push forward.
Dennis is in seething pain, his muscles are screaming at him to stop and take a break. Dennis finally gives in and sits down on the grass. He's gotten far enough to take a break. Dennis lies down on the grass and stares at the sky. He sees the word "JERK" in a cloud. He lets a tear out or two or he starts weeping. He curls into a ball and cries and cries. He isn't sure why, maybe he misses his 'family' or maybe he misses Dan or maybe it's the pain in his muscles. But he lets it all out.
It's been a few hours and the sun is setting, Dennis wipes the remains of tears off his face. Dan would never cry, he would tell you to get up and go back to work. And get back to work the small boy did. He got back to walking.
He followed the tracks to a neighborhood. He recognized this place, he remembers driving up here to do donuts in Chris's front yard. Dennis chuckles, those were good times.
The Goodhill's woke up at a healthy time, and went to check on their children. Only to find one missing. Dennis was always a problem child so they assumed he was in the kitchen or the living room causing a fuss. They got downstairs and looked for Dennis, only to find a concerning note. Ran away? They thought they were doing good, but apparently not enough. Where could he have gone?
Dennis had gotten to Chris's front yard and peered through the window into the house. Chris is lazing around on the couch with Elise next to him as they watch TV. If Dennis could remember the way back to Dan's house, he could get to Dan. He reaches back to the memory of that day and remembers (sort of) the way Dan got to his house.
And so Dennis sneaks into Chris's house, takes some food, eats, and starts his trek to Dan's house. He follows the directions from his memory as best as he can. He walks through many dirty California streets. Dennis stops and looks up at the giant sign that reads "CASA PARADISIO".
He's home.
He waddles up the stairs and walks to the door in the middle. Putting his ear to the door, he eavesdrops on what's happening inside. "How do I hit them where it hurts?" Yep, that's his Dan.
Dennis gathers the courage to knock on the door.
KNOCK KNOCK.
"GO AWAY, I'M NOT INTERESTED."
KNOCK KNOCK
"I SAID GO AWAY!"
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.
"UGH, FINE"
Dennis hears Dan lumber over to the door and open the door. Dan looks over and then looks down. Dan's confused, but a smile slowly crossed his face. Dennis looks up confused but is swept up into a hug by Dan.
"I've missed you too."
